In a world that is changing at an unprecedented pace, what can education provide that will prepare today’s children for the challenges of the Twenty-first century? This report introduces the forces that lead to rapid environmental change and the impact of a relative lag in educational reform in chapter one. In the first part of chapter two, it reviews the strategies various species including our own use to adapt to the environment: exploration, exploitation, knowledge acquisition, cooperation, information transfer, and niche-tailoring. Adaptability and exploration are key to any species that lives in changing environments, where mechanisms generating innovations are being selected.
